Taketomi Island
Taketomi Island is a small island formed by the uplift of coral reefs. It is located about 15 minutes by boat from Ishigaki Island. The island preserves many traditional Ryukyuan-style houses with red-tiled roofs, surrounded by coral stone walls. Various Shisa guardian statues are placed on the rooftops, and the streets are covered with white coral sand, creating a nostalgic and picturesque scene that reflects the pure and simple beauty of old Okinawa, making visitors feel as if they have traveled back in time to the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Additionally, Taketomi Island is home to several stunning beaches:
•Kaiji Beach (カイジ浜, Star Sand Beach): The sand here is mixed with star-shaped foraminifera and coral fragments, giving it the name "star sand."
•Nishi Pier (西桟橋, Nishi-sanbashi): An old pier stretching into the deep blue sea, making it a perfect spot to watch the sunset.
•Kondoi Beach (コンドイ浜, Kondoi-hama): With shallow waters and fine white sand, this beach is ideal for swimming and relaxation.
One of the island’s unique attractions is the water buffalo cart tour. Visitors can ride a cart pulled by a water buffalo while listening to traditional Sanshin music (a three-stringed Okinawan instrument). Local guides share historical stories and describe the scenery as they lead you through the island’s charming old village.(conducted in Japanese)
Taketomi Island is small in size, making it easy to explore by bicycle or on foot. There are no large commercial facilities, only small local restaurants and guesthouses, allowing visitors to experience the most authentic and tranquil Ryukyuan island life.
